When Life Gets You Down…

Life is not on my side this week. I blame April. April has been out to get me for a while now. I really don’t like you, April. No one needs all your flowers and sunshine, okay? Save it for May when I can frolic out in the fields (i.e. watch Netflix in my bed) instead of being sardined into crowded seminar classrooms.

And as the dreaded April has arrived, I have been considering a few of the things that I find myself doing to get me out of my April-funk.


1. Exercise. There is nothing better than exercise when it comes to picking up my mood. Personally, I find high-intensity sports are the best for those endorphins (running/climbing) but, walking can work well too. Usually, anything that gets me moving and lets my brain wander away from what’s troubling me is helpful.

2. Watch TV. Okay, this is probably counter-intuitive to #1 but, sometimes the one thing that gets me through the day is knowing I can lay down in my bed and watch Netflix when I get home. There is nothing like watching a few Grey’s Anatomy reruns to make me feel better (because fictional problems are always infinitely worse in comparison).

3. Talk to someone. Usually, it is helps for me to tell someone about what I am experiencing. Sometimes it helps just to hear someone say, “Wow – that sucks.”

4. Go outside. When I am feeling really stressed, I like to go outside and take a breath. Something about being inside when my brain is about to explode makes everything seem worse. Going outside is a reality check – The world is big. This problem is small. You’ll be fine.

5. Think about all the things that are going right. I am a believer in the self-fulfilling prophecy. If you expect bad things are going to happen, it’s more likely that you’ll be anticipating and, the sting will be worse. At least for me, when I focus on good things (there has to be at least one thing, even if it was eating waffles for breakfast) it helps me refocus myself and encourages me to keep expecting good things rather than dwelling on the bad.

    Cook or bake something delicious and do nice things for people, leave notes for strangers (have you checked out moreloveletters.com?), I should probably watch more TEDtalks too…

    I’ve been in a huge blogging funk. I haven’t touched my blog for like a month -_- I need to get back to it, life kind of just caught up with me; I kept switching birth controls and it’s been messing with my thoughts, on top of that my car is broken and I need to get it fixed enough to trade in and get a new car :-P Oh, life’s lemons… It’s a good thing I like lemonade…

    Hope you snap out of it! :-) Sounds like you just need a break/vacation.

      Why is it that when it rains, it pours? lol. I get in blogging funks all the time. It helps me if I just power through it. I feel guilty if I start skipping posts, and it makes it hard for me to get back into it since I just start feeling like…nah, why bother? lol. I probably do need a vacation but, the semester is only halfway through so, what can you do? ;)

    Aww, I hope you start feeling better soon! I understand the funk. I get in those sometimes and a great workout, going to a movie or favorite restaurant, or getting a mani/pedi usually help. :-)

      Thanks :) Running clears my head but, rock climbing especially makes me forget my problems. Something about dangling 30 feet above the ground does that to a person. lol.

    I know it’s bad but sometimes I rely on TV to get me out of a funk, too. My guilty pleasure: Bravo’s Housewives of “fill-in-the-blank”. Terrible, I know. And this is so cliché but I also firmly believe that there is nothing chocolate can’t fix. Hope your April gets a little better. :-)
